As you all know, I am a working mom. K (I'll call him this to protect his image as a metrosexual) is a working dad, but fortunately for us (although he may beg to differ), he works from home. This means that he has the lovely pleasure of schleping the kids to school and daycare in the morning and three late mornings a week, he gets to go pick our daughter up from kindergarten. Yes, that's right. Here in Illinois, it's still half-day kindergarten. Not only is this terribly inconvenient for working parents, I just don't see how they can fit everything you need to know in kindergarten in 2.75 hours. But nonetheless, this is how it is and our little girl seems to be adjusting well to big-kid school. K, on the other hand, is having a bit of a hard time getting his work done during the day which means a) he works late into the night most nights and b) I'm not getting much lovin' during the week. A+ B = cranky parents. But it's just one year, right?
In our pleasant little suburb it is a bit like going back in time. Most moms do not work, or if they do it is part-time. Probably 75% of her classmates get picked up by their mothers. Not too many fathers on campus either. Aside from K, we know of only two other dads that stay home. In our short time in the school community, we've learned that one dad is nicknamed "Creepy Guy" and the other is fondly referred to as "Perverted Guy Who Puts Rocks in His Pants and Makes Little Boys Go in After Them". Sigh. I wonder what the moms will be calling the tall, unshaven half-Iranian man.

Hope none of them have seen Little Children! Or watched Lipstick Jungle last night ;)
I'm telling you--I don't know what's up with the 1/2 day Kindergarten. Crazy. They just started full-day here last year. I remember having to pay for the "after-care" (e.g. other 3 hours at school that should have been free)--it was like $400 a month!
Yikes. I have heard that about La Grange, as our cousin who lives there does work part-time and that's such a rarity. I know she said when the kids are older you have to pay a fee if they are going to stay at school to each lunch instead of walking home! Does that exist anywhere else in the US?? It's really wild. I'm glad K can be there during the day or you'd be so stuck!
